Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Wednesday, June 30th:
• Would you be interested in going to a green general store. One that only sells products with buzzwords like sustainable, organic, reuseable and recycled. There’s one in Shelburne now, on Shelburne road, called Home Ecology, where you’ll find many ways, lots of small steps to take to go green!
• Don’t forget your washer has a cold setting. It does just as good a job getting the clothes clean and detergents now are fashioned to work better on cold. Save the energy and use the cold!
Sunday is the 4th of July, and what better way to honor the nation we love than by protecting and conserving its natural resources? My tips this week, I hope, will help you plan a greener celebration! Party planning, not only do we take the menu seriously, we also have high expectations for how our party will look! Instead of buying all-new U.S.A.-themed decorations, look around to see what you already own that you could use. White Christmas lights could brighten up a late-afternoon get-together. Flowers from your (or a generous neighbor’s) garden can make the perfect centerpiece. Still yearning for red, white, and blue? Dress in it, bake a three-hued cake, or put out bowls of strawberries, blueberries, and sliced apples. Speaking of snacks, buy stuff like potato chips and other nibbles in bulk to prevent single-packaging waste, that is, as long as you're sure it'll all be eaten. Go Green tips for June 29th

Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Tuesday, June 29th:
• Vermont Soap: good clean fun, online at Vermont Soap dot com and friend Vermont Soap on Facebook! Vermont Soap, Exchange Street, Middlebury.
• DR Power Equipment, your authorized Neuton dealer. Go green with naturally smarter power equipment from Neuton and DR Power Equipment on Meegs Road in Vergennes.
Sunday is the 4th of July, and what better way to honor the nation we love than by protecting and conserving its natural resources? My tips this week, I hope, will help you plan a greener celebration! Picnicking is such an important part of the Fourth of July, I mean it’s a great multi-tasking holiday. Eat and watch fireworks or watch fireworks and eat…it all depends on your priorities, I guess! Anyway, with the picnic comes the trash, and with the trash, comes the waste. Of course, you’re not going to want to carry glassware and ceramics on your picnic, not and have it whole and in one piece to use tomorrow! So, I’m not going to lay guilt on you about disposable dishware. Instead I’m just issuing a gentle reminder to encourage the kids and company to reuse their plastic or paper plates as much as possible. When my daughter was younger, I would write her name on the bottom of her cup. It was a lot easier for her to keep track of it that way! You could even have some fun with it, put out markers and let the kids decorate their cups however they want. Then, I promise you, they’ll use that cup all night long! Creatively green on the Go Green Ride at Five on 92.1 WVTK!

Go Green tips for June 28th

Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Monday, June 28th:
• Low on cash? How about a garage sale? This is the season! I’m having one this summer, it’s a chance to de-clutter, meet new people and maybe make more money towards finishing the new house!!
• Too lazy, I mean…too tired to organize a garage sale? Why not take some things to a consignment shop, then. You still make some money, maybe not as much, but you do come out ahead and with a lot less clutter!
Sunday is the 4th of July, and what better way to honor the nation we love than by protecting and conserving its natural resources? My tips this week, I hope, will help you plan a greener celebration! Some 60 million Americans fire up the grill on Independence Day, consuming enough energy – in the form of charcoal, lighter fluid, gas, and electricity – to power 20,000 households for a year, and releasing about 225,000 tons of carbon emissions. To reduce your output, opt for an electric or propane grill, both of which are cleaner-burning than units powered by charcoal. If you must use coal, choose briquettes made of invasive tree species, or derived from sustainably managed forests. Look for them where you buy your charcoal! Greener choices are everywhere, you just have to open your eyes! Green…just do it. This is the Go Green Ride at Five on 92.1 WVTK!

Go Green tips for June 25th
Gotta tip you want to share with Sarah and the Go Green Ride at Five? Email her: sarah@921wvtk.com!
Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Friday, June 25th:
• We only use 20% of the stuff in our homes. We wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time and de-cluttering eliminates 40% of work needed to clean the average home.
• Need help controlling that electric bill? Head to the Shoreham firehouse tomorrow for the “Zap Your Electric Bill” program at 10am. The Shoreham Energy Committee is hosting this free workshop to show people how to cut their electricity usage by 50 percent. Bring your most recent electric bill for them to go over with you. Repeats June 28.
A recycling didja know. I’m sitting here taking, yet, another look at addisoncountyrecycles.org. They’re a wonderful source for the “why’s” and “what’s” of recycling. Didja know that your plastic CD cases are recyclable and can be put in the blue bin for curbside pickups? Didja know that fire extinquishers are not recyclable and do not belong in the blue bin. However, once tapped out, some fire extinguishers can be refilled. Contact your retailer or the manufacturer to learn more about this option. If you’re looking to unload yours, they’re accepted at the District Transfer Station HazWaste Center. Something I have a lot of, freezer or ice packs, (used to keep food cold) are not hazardous and should be thrown out with your regular household trash. Do not puncture them and even if they’re made out of plastic, which so many are, do not place them in your recycling, even if the liquid has leaked out. Didja know that not all glass can go in your bin? Of course, food and beverage class can, but window panes and other ceramics and glassware are not accepted. The ingredients used to make glassware or window pane glass are different from what goes into container glass for bottles and jars, thus rendering it non-recyclable. Want to know more? Check out addisoncountyrecycles.org today to find out if you’re following all of the recycling do’s and avoiding the don’ts! This is the Go Green Ride at Five on 92.1 WVTK!

Go Green tips for June 24th
Gotta tip you want to share with Sarah and the Go Green Ride at Five? Email her: sarah@921wvtk.com!
Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Thursday, June 24th:
• If your current air conditioner is more than eight years old, it's time for a new one. Over the life of the product, the amount you'll save in energy bills will more than likely exceed the cost of the new unit.
• a plastic bag is used for an average of 12 minutes but takes hundereds of years to decompose in landfill? Stock up on reuseable bags that you can fold up and keep in your purse or car for just such an occasion!
It seems to me that as temperatures rise, so do the many unique smells in my home. Nothing ripens a kitty litter quicker than a couple of eighty degree days. This year, I’ve been trying to go chemical air freshener free. It’s been hard, because they’re so easy to reach for and quickly take care of the problem. Think about the harsh chemicals and the aerosol cans used for conventional air fresheners and then think of how much of this indoor (and potentially outdoor) air pollution could be eliminated if every mom or dad in America used natural air fresheners! They’re very simple to create yourself and a wide assortment of ingredients can be found in your kitchen cabinets. Spices like cinnamon, clove, ginger, rosemary; you can boil one or a combination of any for some delicious indoor deodorizers or there’s scented oils, to be found just about anywhere, these days, just read the ingredients carefully to make sure it’s truly natural. You can use scented extracts like vanilla or almond, just dab with a cotton ball and place it strategically around the house. For mildew-y odors (is that a word?), a box of baking soda opened in the offending room will help kill the smell or a small bowl or two of vinegar in the midst of the odor will help to neutralize the problem. There’s always the old stand-by of bread or cookie baking to help mask odors and with that, there’s a yummy reward! Green need never be stinky on the Go Green Ride at Five on 92.1 WVTK!

Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Wednesday, June 23rd:
• Not far to go on that errand? Why not opt to bike or walk there, instead? The calories burnt means there’s a creemee in your future, reward yourself!
• The Sierra Club says that cutting meat out of your diet just one day a week is the equivalent to driving 1,000 less miles a year. Now that’s an impact!
Yesterday, I touched on a couple sure-fire methods of eliminating fleas in your home, safely and pesticide free. Some might say “Eh, we’ve only got a few fleas and really, there’s no big deal. More of a hassle to try to eradicate them. Well, number one, there’s no such thing as just a few fleas, where there’s one, there’s hundreds and the numbers grow with the minute! Fleas are dangerous pests, but insecticides can be equally dangerous. Trust me, there’s nothing sexy about these vampires! Fleas carry tapeworms and a bad infestation can cause serious blood loss to the host. Puppies and kittens can die from flea-induced anemia. Getting rid of them, safely, is not as hard as you might think. And if you don’t have them, but you do have pets, you might want to take some precautionary measures: Eucalyptus Leaves are a natural repellant because fleas don’t like the smell. Scatter them generously through your yard and if you don’t have a Eucalyptus tree, you can buy them from your local craft store. Another way to repel fleas naturally is with Cedar Chips. These are useful if you don’t have a pet, but your neighbor does and you’d like the fleas in their yard to truly stay their own. Place cedar chips along the fence between your yard and your neighbor's yard and keep the fleas at bay-naturally. Fleas don’t stand a chance with the Go Green Ride at Five on 92.1 WVTK!

Go Green tips for June 22nd

Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Tuesday, June 22nd:
• Looking to save some cash on gas this summer? Make sure you stay current with changing your vehicle’s air filter. A clean air filter can improve gas mileage by as much as ten percent!
• Got a teenager with stinky feet? It’s just a question! Reuse your drier sheets by stuffing them into his or her shoes in the closet. Remember, the smell of your children shouldn’t hit the room before they do!
It’s flea season!!! Can I get a Woo Hoo? I’ve already found a couple in my house and our pets have been treated, so that alone obviously does not do the trick. Now, I’d like to avoid the usage of any more pesticides in the house, especially because I have a child who is often very close to the carpeting. There’s a few tricks to be used that have been found to work without putting your family or pets at risk. Let’s start with an all out infestation, might as well get to the heart of the matter. One word: Borax. Yep, good 'ol 20 Mule Team Borax. Sprinkle on your carpets, let sit overnight, then vacuum. It can also be sprinkled around the fence of your yard. And, as a bonus, ants are also repelled by Borax. Hey, that’s a two for one! For what you consider to be a smaller flea problem, try the Dish Liquid "Trap" - To rid your home of fleas naturally, put a water-filled plate on the floor in the most affected area, add a drop or two of dish liquid, put a lamp on the floor next to the plate and go to bed (unless you want to hide and watch). The fleas are attracted to the light and jump on the plate. They would be able to jump out of water alone but with the dish liquid, they sink and drown. --A quick and quiet death, I promise! Go Green tips for June 21st
Gotta tip you want to share with Sarah and the Go Green Ride at Five? Email her: sarah@921wvtk.com!
Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Monday, June 21st:
• Taking off soon for a summer vacation destination? Remember to pull the plug on any unnecessary appliances - such TVs, VCRs, stereos, toasters, and microwaves. These items can still use energy in their off mode.
• Didja know that outdoor water use can account for up to 50% of total water use for a home during the summer months. No more than twice a week is needed to water that grass and try to remember to turn it off after a half hour, at the most, forty five minutes!
In the Go Green news: CVPS will hold the official opening of the CV Solar Project and Renewable Education Center tomorrow morning at 11. The opening will feature Governor Jim Douglas and representatives of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and Stafford Technical Center, which collaborated on the project. The Center, located on Route seven just north of Rutland, is Vermont’s most accessible solar site and it includes not only the solar project, but a wind measurement tower to which after some more research more wind turbines may be added and there is a hydro facility right across the road, which is also included in the renewable energy education process. The facility is mapped out museum style and the public is encouraged to stop by and either simply walk through on a self-guided tour or make an appointment to be led by a representative. Perfect for ages over seven, this is an incredible opportunity to learn the process of not only the methods in processing Solar power, but all forms of renewable energy. The site is open dawn to dusk and is ideal for day camp travels, after school programs or even Mom and Dad to make an educational stop on the way in to Rutland for a trip to Walmart, which in itself can be an education. You heard it here, first, on The Go Green Ride at Five on 92.1 WVTK!

Go Green tips for June 18th
Gotta tip you want to share with Sarah and the Go Green Ride at Five? Email her: sarah@921wvtk.com!
Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Friday, June 18th:
• Still in the bottled water habit? There are so many cool reuseable bottles out there that are attractive and inexpensive and way better choices than more plastic in our landfills!
• Planning on flying out soon on a summer vacation? Opt for Electronic ticketing, less paper waste and you’re less likely to lose your ticket!
Everyone has that one thing that sets them off. For some, it’s dirty socks on the floor, for others, it might be loud chewing. For me, I get a knee jerk reaction to the waste of food. One way that might happen is if one decides to plant a garden much larger than their family can consume. Now, unless you’re planning to open your own roadside stand, or plan to donate to a local shelter, this is a waste. And if you do plan to donate your excess, that’s something you have to be on top of. No one wants veggies past the expiration date, so to speak. So periodically, at least once a week, you’ll have to make the time to pull your crop and make the trip. Can you make that commitment? What might be better for you, if you’re half as busy as I am, is to simply ask your garden center representative advice on how big your garden should be feed your family. For a family of four, some recommend a 6 by 6ft. plot. Now, don’t even ask me what I think of oversized portions in restaurants, we’ll never get back to the music if I get on that soap box! Opinionated, but green! The Go Green Ride at Five on 92.1 WVTK!

Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Thursday, June 17th:
• Still in the bottled water habit? There are so many cool reuseable bottles out there that are attractive and inexpensive and way better choices than more plastic in our landfills!
• An incredible 69 percent of Americans still don’t recycle. Shocking, that! Look around your workplace and make sure those blue bins are strategically and conveniently located and then, feel free to remind people…often to make use of them!
Father’s day is creeping toward us, are you and the kids ready? Here’s a fun idea, especially if you have little ones. Plant Dad a garden. Not a big honkin’, here’s your present, Dad, go weed it, garden. More of a commemorative, lower maintenance deal that’s wiz to weed, at the most-three feet in diameter. Find and plant some bright, pretty blumes or even his favorite veggies, then, have them put some sort of decorative trim around the perimeter and maybe even a lamenated sign that signifies the occasion. It could say “Dad’s garden” or “Dad digs here!”. It’s a fun and inexpensive idea that offers a learning opportunity and presents them with the chance to do for someone else who really deserves results of their labor! Go Green tips for June 16th
Gotta tip you want to share with Sarah and the Go Green Ride at Five? Email her: sarah@921wvtk.com!
Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Wednesday, June 16th:
• In the mood to save money and go resale? I’ve posted a list of resale shops on the Go Green Ride’s link on 921wvtk.com. Think you can do them all in one day?
• Out of school shouldn’t mean out of options! There’s more to do than just TV and video games. If rain means they’re inside, plan an art or organization project like helping them reorganize their room or closet with lots of cookie breaks!
Father’s Day is quite the conundrum when one is trying to make better green choices. That’s because Dads tend to like things (power equipment, cars, power equipment, electronics, power equipment …you get the idea) that aren’t always best for Mother Earth. There are gift ideas out there that just might help Dad to be greener. Why not take the opportunity to simply take Dad shopping (Make him a fun personized gift certificate) at your local farmers market or nursery. The time spent with you, I’m sure would be gift enough! You could head out to the home-improvement store with your old man, steer him toward human-powered or electric (as opposed to gas-driven) lawn equipment, Energy Star power tools and appliances, and eco-friendly paint brands. He’ll feel good knowing that he’s protecting his family and the planet from noxious chemicals and emissions. Keep the green in the family with the Go Green Ride at Five on 92.1 WVTK!

Go Green tips for June 15th
Gotta tip you want to share with Sarah and the Go Green Ride at Five? Email her: sarah@921wvtk.com!
Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Tuesday, June 15th:
Don't forget when the time comes to grocery shop, think farmer's market! You won't find it anywhere else as fresh and it's a wonderful way to contribute to your community. Middlebury's Farmers Market is Saturdays 9:30 to 1 and Wednesdays 9 to 12:30!
The weather is beautiful today, get out and do something outside this evening! Walk, or toss a ball, throw a frisbee, weed a garden, plant a tree...you get the idea.
With Father's Day looming, I'm sure you're busy trying to think up something original for Dad. I know I am. Does Dad pride himself on being the first to get the latest, greatest gadgets? If that's the direction you're headed, you might offer to donate, resell, or recycle his "old" electronics, you know whatever ones you're replacing. There's some really cool eco-friendly gadgetry that he'd love like a solar-powered backpack, which is made mostly of recycled plastic bottles and converts a day's worth of sunlight into a full charge for a laptop or cell phone. Go to www.voltaicsystems.com to take a look!

Go Green tips for June 14th
Gotta tip you want to share with Sarah and the Go Green Ride at Five? Email her: sarah@921wvtk.com!
Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Monday, June 14th:
• If you’re a little proactive, you can recycle your water! Make sure you keep your soap organic and you can re-use your dish water or put a bucket in the shower with you to use in your garden. Every drop counts, that’s for sure!
• You’re switching to warm weather clothes and finding that some of them don’t fit the kids, anymore! At my house, right now, the pile of kids clothes to be donated is growing. We’ll be heading out to make a donation within the next couple of weeks. Clean out those drawers and join me, won’t you?
I’m always going on and on about reuseable shopping bags, it’s an addiction, I admit. I mean, I must own over 30 of them by now. That’s only because I forget to bring some of them along with me for the quick grocery stops and then I buy more, it’s a vicious cycle. Anyway, did you know that many cities and even some countries, are phasing out or even taxing plastic bags. Ireland introduced its plastic bag tax in 2002, charging 15 Euro cents or 22 U.S. cents on each bag. And in 2007, San Francisco became the first U.S. city to introduce a plastic-bag ban, and now Seattle is considering following suit. It’s looking like going plastic will begin to get expensive. So, you then go for paper if you forget your shopping bags, but it’s not necessarily the better choice. Paper bags require more energy to manufacture and release more greenhouse gases when degrading than plastic bags. Truly though, what bag we choose is only a small part of the problem. Focusing on what goes into the bag should perhaps be a bigger issue. Buying only what’s necessary, finding ways to reuse our possessions and taking the time to mend them for a longer life should really be the priority. Bags shmags, it’s all about what you fill them with and what ends up in the landfills! Green is all you need on the Go Green Ride At Five at 92.1 WVTK!

Go Green tips for June 11th
Gotta tip you want to share with Sarah and the Go Green Ride at Five? Email her: sarah@921wvtk.com!
Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Friday, June 11th:
A big green solute to my Daughter's friend, Olivia Cacciatori, who, instead of allowing her friends to buy her gifts for her birthday, asked her party goers for food and goods donations to the Addison County Humane Society. Olivia, you're good people!
Spring cleaning thing weekend? Consider organic cleaning products like vinegar, borax, and baking soda. You can find easy recipes online!
This time of year, many of the home improvement stores will be having their bigger sales in hopes that, as the weather warms up, homeowners will get the yen for little DIY. What have you been putting off until the Summer to get done? Nothing, you say? Stop right there Mr. or Mrs. Content. This is the perfect time to give that bathroom of yours a quick inspection or once over to see how you might improve your water efficiency. Things like low-flow faucets, shower heads and toilets are available right now at substantial savings if you're willing to do your homework. Have you been listening to the Father's Day ads? And...don't be afraid to ask for a discount if you're buying multiples. The worst they can say is "no"! Trying to keep that green in your pockets on the Go Green Ride At Five!

Go Green tips for June 10th
Gotta tip you want to share with Sarah and the Go Green Ride at Five? Email her: sarah@921wvtk.com!
Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Thursday, June 10th:
• For scrubbing yourself clean, consider using an all-natural brush or washcloth. Bristled bamboo-back brushes, organic-cotton washcloths, and sea-sponge loofahs are all effective and environmentally friendly.
• If you haven’t yet, this season, dust off that bike, pump up the tires and take it out on the road. No gas needed! And the calories burnt means you get to stop for a creemee.
Oh recycling, we’re all trying to be good and stick everything we can into the bin for pick up day. There’s confusion, though, when it comes to what, exactly we can and cannot recycle and then, what condition it should be in when it does fly into the bin. Don’t get frustrated, get educated. There’s a website you can visit that gives you all the information you need to make the process happen as it should. Hop on the computer and click on addison county recycles dot org. It’s the website for Addison County Solid Waste Management District, they’re pros out there, they know how the show is run. The site is very user friendly and incredibly comprehensive. So, before you stick it in the bin, check it at the site! Addison county recycles dot org That’s the green of it on 92.1 WVTK’s Go Green Ride at Five

Go Green tips for June 9th
Gotta tip you want to share with Sarah and the Go Green Ride at Five? Email her: sarah@921wvtk.com!
Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Wednesday, June 9th:
• Didja know that you can now buy kitchenware products made of recycled materials? Or, better yet, clean out that butter or yogurt tub and give Tupperware a run for their money!
• Speaking of recycling in the kitchen: before you rush out to buy another pan after your husband burnt his oatmeal in your old one, instead go to the consignment stores...less resources and money spent in the end!
I'm a confessed book hog. I love to read 'em, collect 'em, trade 'em with friends, everything but dust 'em (that's my teenager's job). I only wish I had more time to spend with them. I long for an afternoon with no other worries than whether Brooke and her Norse Viking, Blake, will run off together in that romance novel I've been trying to finish. There are gadgets, now, you can spend lots of money on that can help you avoid buying new books ( I detect some irony there…). I'd get into that but why give them the free advertising. Instead, I'd just like to remind you of our neighborhood libraries, full to the gills with many adventures, mysteries, biographies, movies...whatever you're looking for and all of them free to a good temporary home. Or why not take a walk through a used book store like Otter Creek Books on Main Street in Middlebury. I like them, so they get a free mention! Hey, reading is privilege that many don't get. Spend lots of time and very little money on the pleasure, thus making it all that much more pleasurable. Just some green words on the Go Green Ride at Five on 92.1 WVTK!

Go Green tips for June 7th

Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Monday, June 7th:
• A good way to keep our waterways cleaner is switching to organic soaps, shampoos and detergents. Beware of of greenwashing, though, or green claims that aren’t completely true. Do your research and read those labels carefully!
• Before you run out to buy or even rent a DVD, try hulu.com. Their library of movies and TV shows is ever growing and watching them, absolutely free! Did you hear me, I said, …”FREE”!!!!
In the Green Mountain State Green News on the Go Green Ride at Five (say that five times fast!), Senator Bernie Sanders has announced that he has secured one hundred twenty thousand dollars that will go toward establishing community gardens at 40 schools throughout Vermont. Seeking to not only help students learn the importance of good nutrition and a healthy diet, the Senator also said the program will broaden the school’s curriculum and help make learning fun. What a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about growing food and where food comes from. The programs will include lessons about diet and the benefits of fresh food compared to processed snacks. Student gardeners also will learn about Vermont’s rich agricultural history and, in the process, strengthen bonds between schools and their communities. Senator Sanders says it’s his hope that this project will prove to be a successful pilot and eventually help bring school community gardens to every school in the nation. My only concern in this is that it might put the tater tot on the endangered list, and let’s not even consider what it might do to the square pizza!! All you need is green, the Go Green Ride at Five on 921WVTK.

Go Green tips for June 4th
Gotta tip you want to share with Sarah and the Go Green Ride at Five? Email her: sarah@921wvtk.com!
Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Friday, June 4th:
• Want a cooler house when you get home in the evening? Make sure to close all your curtains before you leave in the morning. Great way to stay naturally cool…that and staying naked—Oh my eyes!
• Those with air conditioners may be feeling the energy burn, so cut where ever you can. Days are longer in the summer, take advantage of natural light and switch off those lamps. You’ll be cooler, too! And again, there’s always the naked option.
Last night, it happened and a bit earlier in the season than normal for me. I woke up at 1am, just so hot. No, it’s not hot flashes, ha ha! It was just a warmer evening, wasn’t it? We did have our ceiling fan on, but it didn’t quite do the job and my husband hates the window open because outside noise keep him awake and our dog will start barking. Anyone else suffering in this? I know, strap on a backbone! There are ways to cool your house down, though, without air conditioning. This is especially true if you have windows on both sides of your house. Crack the windward one and then open the opposite one wider and you’ll get a nice cross breeze and that’s all I require. I have a friend, a single friend (an important element in this story), who, when it get’s too hot in the house, he’ll go out and sleep in hammock that’s hanging in his yard. That’s a great idea, but I think bugs would the end of me. Just the thought of what could crawl on me, I don’t think I can go there. I’m warm, but still green! It’s the Go Green Ride at Five on 921WVTK.

Go Green tips for June 3rd
Gotta tip you want to share with Sarah and the Go Green Ride at Five? Email her: sarah@921wvtk.com!
Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Thursday, June 3rd:
• What comes to mind when I say recycled pets? Well, aren't we practicing recycling when we adopt from the Addison County Humane Society? Don't shop, adopt!
• Tired of your old wardrobe, books, DVD’s or CD’s? Swap them for something fresh! There’s tons of sights online that enable you to simply swap your stuff with someone else and no mall need be visited in the endeavor! Visit swapacd.com, swapadvd.com and paperbackswap.com for access to thousands of CDs, books and DVDs. To switch duds: Check out swapstyle.com for more information.
If your kids are like mine, the latest technology is primary on their list of must haves. So & so has the itouch-phone, super pixellated, digital-a-rific, thing-a-ma- jig, and I’m gonna hold my breath until I get one, too. Luckily blue is her color! Seriously, though, trying to keep up with the Jones’ electronics could put you in the poor house and contribute to wasted resources. Twice, now, my husband and I have had success with refurbished electronics. He did a little research on the web and we found an ipod—cheap! You can get refurbished electronics for a steal (they often sell for less than 50 percent of the retail price!), and before they're resold to the public, they go through an intense defect-testing process and the warranties usually remain intact. So you can save money and help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. Shop at www.dyscern.com and www.refurbdepot.com. See, I’ve got your graduation gift list all sewn up! It’s the Go Green Ride at Five on 921WVTK.

Go Green tips for June 2nd

Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Wednesday, June 2nd:
• I’ve eliminated a load to pile in the drier by hanging all my jeans up to dry. Not only does this save energy, it also keeps them from fading as fast and I can hold off shrinkage, as well. That means if they get too small after you hang them up to dry, you have no appliance to blame!
• 25% of the electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off. Unplug it, baby, unplug it!
You’ve got to love this warm weather, but we’ve already had a few nights that have tempted me to go ahead and install that air conditioner. I’m just not a good warm weather sleeper and my teenager is just miserable if the evening temperature is above sixty-five degrees—oh, she’s bear! So, I did a little googling to see if there’s some tips to help with cooling things down without AC.
First, seal and caulk to prevent heat from seeping in through leaky doors and windows. (If you’re already weatherized for winter, no problem there.) Then, move the air as much as possible. You can do this with a ceiling fan (make sure it’s rotating counterclockwise), portable fans, or, if there’s even a slight breeze outside, cracking the windows on the house’s windward side just a tad, and on the other side of your home, opening the windows wider; this should create a stronger draft. That one worked super well in my house!
If you simply must turn on the air conditioner, make sure your unit’s filter is clean and get the refrigerant level checked – if it’s low, you could be wasting 20% of the system’s energy. It’s cool to be green on 92.1 WVTK’s Go Green Ride at Five.

Go Green tips for June 1st

Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Monday, June 1st:
• This is a prime time to buy local! Especially if we’re talking about the myriad of farmers markets and plant sales going on through out the warmer months. Never a better time to invest in local produce! You can’t beat it!
• Got a yen to garden but no time to do it all the way? Basil, thyme, oregano, sage, and parsley are great herbs for beginning gardeners—green thumb optional!
This is the season of weddings and graduations and family gatherings! If you had the panic moment I did yesterday when I realized my daughter had outgrown adequate dress clothing for her upcoming graduation party, perhaps I’ll see you at the neighborhood resale shop? I know saving money right now is a priority for all of us, with summer vacations looming, yards that need expensive grooming and yard equipment that needs repair to begin that grooming…Why not visit a couple of the wonderful resale shops in Addison County? At this very moment I’m wearing a pair of jeans I purchased from Round Robin in Middlebury’s Marbleworks, with them I’ve donned a belt I found at Neat Repeats on Main Street. The two, together, about seven bucks. There’s many of these shops in your community: in Vergennes,, check out Your Turn Consignment Shop on Main Street or Sweet Charity, nearby. There’s few more in Middlebury to take a peek into: MMM Thrift Store on Boardman Street, Junebug Mother and & Child, which is brand new or if you’d like both new and used at your fingertips, take a look at Carolyn’s Closet on Main Street. All of these businesses make shopping an experience, not a chore. Today’s style report is that new is so yesterday and gently used is the new black! You heard it here, first!
