Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Friday, July 16th:

• Environmentally friendly moisturizers are great, but expensive. Did you know that by simply takig a warm shower instead of a hot one can minimize your need for moisturizer in the first place? You’ll use less and make the investment of your green beauty product last even longer!
• Did you know that you can recycle old eyeglasses? Donating your old glasses to an organization that redistributes them to individuals who can’t afford a new pair! You’ll improve someone’s quality of life and extend the life of those old frames you were going to throw out.

• If every house in the United States changed all of the light bulbs in their house, that would be equivalent to taking one million cars off the streets. Want to switch to fluorescents, but don’t like the look of them? Go take another look! They’ve evolved and now have new designs that really look like the conventional bulb and some, even better! Whether you’re looking for colored bulbs or dimmable, maybe candelabra or a buglites, some can flicker! They’re no longer expensive and the tradeoff for the environment is well worth it! Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Thursday, July 15th:

• Like to buy the all-natural cleaners? They can be expensive! Make you own, spray some hydrogen peroxide and then some white vinegar onto the surface-it doesn’t what order you spray them in- then wipe it off. It does the job cheaper, without the toxins
• The classified ads aren’t just for lining the bottom of the bird cage, Take a look, you won’t believe what you’ll find…cheap or even better, for free. Talk about recycling, that would be my favorite kind!

Let’s adjourn to the bathroom, shall we? Do you have a teenager in the house? I do, and how many times have a stood outside that bathroom door and said those inevitable words uttered by my mother, her mother and generations beforehand (only that involved a wash basin, I’m sure). Say it with me…What do you have a 60 gallon body? You could buy a timer for the bathroom, that’s helps someone distracted with exfoliating and over-conditioning to keep an eye on how much time they’re taking in the shower. Or maybe just pick your battles and go get a low flow shower head. They don’t cost much and the water and energy savings can quickly pay back your investment. And then, live to fight another day, after all, with that loud music issue and the dirty dishes left in the living-room, shouldn’t you save your strength for those arguments instead? • Remember in this age of recycling, that a recycled pet is also a great choice! The Addison County Humane Society in Middlebury has a full house of wonderful animals, all in need of a forever home. Don’t shop…adopt!
• On the road, soon for the vacation. When was your last tune up? A properly maintained engine can improve mileage by up to 4%. Money save on gas can be put towards a vacation fun!

Every day this week, I have the privilege of broadcasting live at the 32nd annual Festival on Green on Middlebury’s town green. Today, the green was packed with families enjoying the Brown Bag Special, featuring a wonderful show by the No Strings Marionette Company. Now, I arrive way before the show starts, before the audience arrives, most of the time and I’m there after they all pack up their blankets and coolers and head for an air-conditioned locale. What I love about this festival is the organizers have gone a long way towards encouraging the public to dispose of their lunch correctly. Not only with large garbage receptacles positioned through out the park, they also have plenty of recycle bins. I witnessed many parents encouraging their children of all ages to separate their garbage and make sure they were using the correct bin. I actually heard a mom telling her young child to leave the green better than he found it. I felt so much pride in my town at that moment. Way to go, Middlebury! Way to go Festival on the Green! Tonight at 7, the Doughboys are playing! Grab the blanket, a good snuggler and go enjoy the show! It’s the Go Green Ride at Five on 92.1 WVTK!

Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Friday, July 9th:

• Don’t forget the reusable shopping bags at the grocery! You don’t need all that plastic! Buy a few plain ones and have the kids decorate them so you’ll be the height of style!
• Think about where you have to go today. Is it really necessary to drive there? Could you walk, instead, or wait until you have more to do in that area? Consolidate those errands and save gas!

Summer is the time for camping and if living a greener life is what you’re all about, here’s some tips to help you rough it as greenly as possible. To minimize your impact on wildlife and vegetation, opt for well-established campsites such as those you can reserve in most national parks. If you do opt for some backcountry camping, look for a durable surface such as gravel or rock slab and avoid fragile ecological sites such as meadows and the edges of rivers or lakes. If you plan to make a campfire, it’s a great idea to bring your own firewood, but if car space is prohibitive and you can’t do that, use only fallen sticks found on the ground and try to find only pieces smaller than your wrist. Some campsites don’t provide a campfire ring, so use a fire pan or build a small mound fire. To prevent forest fires, never leave flames or coals unattended, and always douse hot ash with a lot of water. And to quote my mother, “leave it better than you found it”, it’s the “no trace principle”. Clean up your mess and maybe go one better and encourage the family to pick up trash as you hike in the area. You could even make a game of it and keep track of how many pieces of trash everyone’s picked up and the winner gets an extra ‘smore! Yes, for me the best rewards are chocolate rewards! Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Thursday, July 8th:

• Dealing with the heat without air conditioning can be a sweat. Invest today in some black out curtains to help your home stay cool. They not only block out the light, they insulate your windows, year round! Keep the hot air out and your cooler air in!
• I always say go with recycled goods, and that should include pets! The best recycled pets are available right now at the Addison County Humane Society! Visit their location on Boardman Street in Middlebury, today!

Time for firing up that BBQ and that could mean using any one of a number of firelighters available. Hey, you gotta have the “whoomph!” sound, otherwise, it’s just not a barbecue, right? Most firelighter products are based on fossil fuels, crude oil, like kerosene and occasionally with some nasty additional chemicals thrown in. There are natural alternatives, though, and it might mean taking a few more minutes to get things fired up, so to speak. You could go old school with old newspaper, tinder, kindling, a bit of puffing and patience; Dried orange peel makes for a good natural firelighter too. You can also save up your toilet roll spindles and cram them with newspaper; leaving a bit out the end as a wick. That’ll burn just a bit more slowly, to help ignition There’s also greener charcoal available, now. Google it and find out for yourself! . Living green shouldn’t mean giving up a summer indulgence completely if you’re willing to make a few adjustments. Vote earth and go green! The Go Green Ride at Five on 92.1 WVTK!

Go Green tips for July 7th

Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Wednesday, July 7th:

• Styrofoam or polystyrene is not recyclable, nor should we let it end up in our landfills. So, what to do with it? Reuse it! Those big pieces that your new appliance arrived packed in, break them up and store them until you need some packing materials. You know you’ll need them eventually!
• I always say go with recycled goods, and that should include pets! The best recycled pets are available right now at the Addison County Humane Society! Visit their location on Boardman Street in Middlebury, today!

The hot weather means more water used this time of year, how on earth do we keep it at a reasonable level? We’re washing cars more, letting the kids run around in the hose, watering our lawns, dog washing…what do you let go? None of it, if you just make some adjustments. Let the kids run in the sprinklers when they’re watering the lawn! Get an adjustable trigger nozzle for the hose to use for car and dog washing, and move your car onto the grass, use organic soap and water the lawn while you wash your car. You could even skip the soap, all together, if it’s just dust you’re tackling. While I’m on the subject, try to move your car in the shade so it can stays cool. The hotter the metal, the quicker the water evaporates and the more liquid you’ll need—or wash it either early in the morning or wait until the end of the day. One more tip that I learned the hard way: don’t wash your dog anywhere near manure. It’s like gold to a canine nose and just screams for a good dive through. Funny how they prefer the smell of manure to dog soap, huh? This is the Go Green Ride at Five on 92.1 WVTK!

Go Green tips for July 6th

Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Tuesday, July 6th:

• Haven’t planned that family vacation, yet? Why not opt for a stay-cation this year? Go ahead and still take your two weeks from work, but plan outings closer to home for you and the kids. People travel from all over the world to explore the Green Mountain State and you live here. Go see something everyday that you haven’t seen before!
• Want to instill in your young children the need for green? Try reading them Dr. Seuss’s “The Lorax”. It’s about what happens after the trees are gone. This book helps them understand their own impact. A great place to start to grow green!

Even if you opt to stay home over the summer, your fuel usage will still be up. More sleepovers, more shopping, more go-getting, kid carting, the car will see more use over the summer. So look for ways to save gas, even if you still have to be behind the wheel more than you’d like.

• Try to slow down. Driving 10 mph above 60 is like adding nearly 50 cents to the price of a gallon of gas, since higher speed equals more guzzling.
• Once a month, check the pressure of each of the tires against the guidelines listed in your car's manual; add air if needed. Doing this can improve mileage by about 3 percent.
• Replace air filters regularly. A new oxygen sensor alone can improve mileage by as much as 15 percent.

Go Green tips for July 2nd

Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Friday, July 2nd:

• Game off! That’s what my daughter often hears. During a Vermont summer, with all this lovely sunshine (most of the time, anyway), why on earth do you want to be inside? Get those yungin’s out of the house and on a skateboard, into roller blades, onto a skooter or bicycle or for that matter into a pair of sneakers and gone on a hike!
• Got powerstrips? A UL-certified power strip enables you to switch multiple appliances off for the evening to prevent phantom electrical draw. Just a quick click saves you money and energy!

Sunday is the 4th of July, and what better way to honor the nation we love than by protecting and conserving its natural resources? My tips this week, I hope, will help you plan a greener celebration! According to the clean air council, every day 43,000 tons of food are thrown out in the United States and each year Americans toss out enough paper and plastic cups, forks, and spoons to circle the equator 300 times. That's the bad news. The good news is that with a bit of creativity and a little know-how, you can throw a fun, festive affair without it taking a major toll on the environment. As for decorating, put the kids in charge. Point them to the construction paper and let them go to town making fun, all American party trimmings and centerpieces. As for your menu, think local. Hit the farmers market and grab some beautiful colors to accent your table and tickle your pallet. On the grill, I know for many the meat is a must, but veggies are wonderful off the grill. Skewer up some colorful bell peppers and tomatoes. Do your corn on the cob on the grill instead of the stove top. Yum! Now I can’t wait til Sunday! Put another skewer on the barbie! Go Green tips for July 1st

Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Thursday, July 1st:

• If you clean out the lint filter of your clothes dryer before each load, you'll reduce your energy use by up to 30 percent and that's nothing to sneeze at, considering the dryer is one of the biggest energy hogs in the house. Oh and waiting till you have a full load saves lots of energy, too!
• Can’t afford a low flow toilet? Here’s an free alternative, put a brick or plastic milk jug filled with pebbles in the tank. The space it takes up reduces the amount of water needed to fill the tank, so you'll save gallons (and money) with each flush.

Sunday is the 4th of July, and what better way to honor the nation we love than by protecting and conserving its natural resources? My tips this week, I hope, will help you plan a greener celebration! Fireworks shouldn’t be a DIY thing, so don’t set off your own, and discourage others from entertaining themselves with ill-gotten explosives. My husband is a fire fighter and the stories he’s heard… Unprofessional fireworks aren’t just dangerous in the immediate physical sense – they also release noxious chemicals into the air and water, causing long-term eco-damage. So, let the a fireworks professional entertain you, instead, and carpool to a community fireworks display. In Middlebury, they’ll be setting them off tonight after the VSO concert. So, if you don’t have tickets but can arrange to be in the immediate area of Middlebury College, you can watch the big boom show there, around 8:30 or so. In Bristol, they’re doing their fireworks tomorrow night at 7:30 on their recreational field and in Brandon, you can catch their show at Park Village on Saturday night starting at 7:30, as well! A safe holiday can be a green one, too! The Go Green Ride at Five on 92.1 WVTK!
