Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Thursday, July 8th:
• Dealing with the heat without air conditioning can be a sweat. Invest today in some black out curtains to help your home stay cool. They not only block out the light, they insulate your windows, year round! Keep the hot air out and your cooler air in!
• I always say go with recycled goods, and that should include pets! The best recycled pets are available right now at the Addison County Humane Society! Visit their location on Boardman Street in Middlebury, today!
Time for firing up that BBQ and that could mean using any one of a number of firelighters available. Hey, you gotta have the “whoomph!” sound, otherwise, it’s just not a barbecue, right? Most firelighter products are based on fossil fuels, crude oil, like kerosene and occasionally with some nasty additional chemicals thrown in. There are natural alternatives, though, and it might mean taking a few more minutes to get things fired up, so to speak. You could go old school with old newspaper, tinder, kindling, a bit of puffing and patience; Dried orange peel makes for a good natural firelighter too. You can also save up your toilet roll spindles and cram them with newspaper; leaving a bit out the end as a wick. That’ll burn just a bit more slowly, to help ignition There’s also greener charcoal available, now. Google it and find out for yourself! . Living green shouldn’t mean giving up a summer indulgence completely if you’re willing to make a few adjustments. Vote earth and go green! The Go Green Ride at Five on 92.1 WVTK!
