Go Green tips for July 6th

Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Tuesday, July 6th:

• Haven’t planned that family vacation, yet? Why not opt for a stay-cation this year? Go ahead and still take your two weeks from work, but plan outings closer to home for you and the kids. People travel from all over the world to explore the Green Mountain State and you live here. Go see something everyday that you haven’t seen before!
• Want to instill in your young children the need for green? Try reading them Dr. Seuss’s “The Lorax”. It’s about what happens after the trees are gone. This book helps them understand their own impact. A great place to start to grow green!

Even if you opt to stay home over the summer, your fuel usage will still be up. More sleepovers, more shopping, more go-getting, kid carting, the car will see more use over the summer. So look for ways to save gas, even if you still have to be behind the wheel more than you’d like.

• Try to slow down. Driving 10 mph above 60 is like adding nearly 50 cents to the price of a gallon of gas, since higher speed equals more guzzling.
• Once a month, check the pressure of each of the tires against the guidelines listed in your car's manual; add air if needed. Doing this can improve mileage by about 3 percent.
• Replace air filters regularly. A new oxygen sensor alone can improve mileage by as much as 15 percent.
