Go Green tips for July 2nd

Gotta tip you want to share with Sarah and the Go Green Ride at Five? Email her: sarah@921wvtk.com!

Here Sarah's groovy green tips for Friday, July 2nd:

• Game off! That’s what my daughter often hears. During a Vermont summer, with all this lovely sunshine (most of the time, anyway), why on earth do you want to be inside? Get those yungin’s out of the house and on a skateboard, into roller blades, onto a skooter or bicycle or for that matter into a pair of sneakers and gone on a hike!
• Got powerstrips? A UL-certified power strip enables you to switch multiple appliances off for the evening to prevent phantom electrical draw. Just a quick click saves you money and energy!

Sunday is the 4th of July, and what better way to honor the nation we love than by protecting and conserving its natural resources? My tips this week, I hope, will help you plan a greener celebration! According to the clean air council, every day 43,000 tons of food are thrown out in the United States and each year Americans toss out enough paper and plastic cups, forks, and spoons to circle the equator 300 times. That's the bad news. The good news is that with a bit of creativity and a little know-how, you can throw a fun, festive affair without it taking a major toll on the environment. As for decorating, put the kids in charge. Point them to the construction paper and let them go to town making fun, all American party trimmings and centerpieces. As for your menu, think local. Hit the farmers market and grab some beautiful colors to accent your table and tickle your pallet. On the grill, I know for many the meat is a must, but veggies are wonderful off the grill. Skewer up some colorful bell peppers and tomatoes. Do your corn on the cob on the grill instead of the stove top. Yum! Now I can’t wait til Sunday! Put another skewer on the barbie! It's the Go Green Ride at Five on 92.1 WVTK!
